The Harlem Opera Festival celebrates the next generation of great opera singers by -- usually -- presenting emerging opera singers of color in recital format on Sunday evenings at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park.
In the Summer of 2018, two Harlem Opera Festival events were presented -- the first on Sunday, July 15th and the second on Sunday, July 22nd. Two winners of the Harlem Opera Theater's annual vocal competition were presented on each night.
The performances -- from 7:00 pm to 7:45 pm -- preceded the Sunday evening performances of the Classical Theatre of Harlem's Summer play.
The Summer of 2019 witnessed the 2nd annual Harlem Opera Festival. On July 14th and July 21st, we presented winners of Opera Ebony's annual vocal competition.
As in 2018 the performances -- from 7:00 pm to 7:45 pm -- preceded the Sunday evening performances of the Classical Theatre of Harlem's Summer play.
The occurrance of the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to change our plans in 2020. Because our venue was not available to us to present the winners of the Harlem Opera Theater's annual vocal competition, we live-streamed the vocal competition itself.
